The Joy of Eating Cheap

I am sure most of you can resonate with that “just struck gold” feeling of finding something extremely tasty for really really cheap. I almost always immediately think of how I’m going to go out of my way to come back for more of whatever it is I’m eating. Well, luckily for me, I struck gold in my office canteen a few months back. I’m sorry to include a venue in my blog that most of you won’t be able to visit- but maybe this can make for an easy, delicious recipe idea for those of you enterprising people out there.

Chris, my office canteen chef is great. He’s one of those people you know really cares about the food he serves people and gets excited about offering new dishes. That particular week, my colleagues and I were in for a treat.

So, on most work days, I go with the flow and usually just resign myself to a sandwich or a salad. But imagine having Goat’s cheese and caramelised onion chutney on ciabiatta with toasted walnuts on a bed of salad greens. And wait for the best part, this was £2.60. The goat’s cheese was slightly warmed so as to pretty much melt in your mouth, but not hot enough to ruin that creamy, dreamy texture. The flavours of the cheese, the sweetness of the onion, the textures of the crispy walnuts and the crunchy, fresh lettuce blended harmoniously- like Beethoven’s Fifth…but in your mouth. Oh did I mention it was £2.60. The price definitely added to the taste. Who gets this?

This is what it looked like. Ask me nicely and maybe I’ll get you a taster next time it’s on the menu.
